Day 24: Laundry Room {31 Days of Easy Decluttering}
Welcome back to 31 Days of Easy Decluttering! If you’ve missed any of the previous posts, there are links to them all here.
Today’s Easy Decluttering Project
Today we’re talking about decluttering the laundry room. I don’t mean putting away any clean clothes or washing any dirty clothes that may be there. {Of course, if you want to do those things you can.} But I mean dealing with all the other things that clutter up your laundry room.
It’s hard enough for most of us to be motivated to spend time in the laundry room but when it’s cluttered it makes it even more overwhelming.
Laundry rooms may be in a corner of the basement and end up doubling as a storage area for things you don’t use often. Or they may be in a closet off your kitchen and wind up being a place to keep overflow kitchen items like paper towels or a large pot. Or they may be near your garage / entry area and become a dumping ground for items that are coming and going from your home.
Wherever your laundry area is, it likely has clutter. So let’s tackle that clutter today and help make laundry a less overwhelming task!
Easy Decluttering Steps
Throughout the series, you’ll follow these steps to complete each daily task. {Don’t forget to take before and after pictures to share too!}
Note: The main purpose of this series is to declutter so don’t get overwhelmed doing too much cleaning. Once your house is less cluttered it will be easier to clean so you can always come back and do it later!
Also, if you have the time, you can organize the space while you’re doing this step, but don’t get overwhelmed with too much organizing this month. We’re focused on decluttering!
Purging Tips for Laundry Rooms
There really aren’t specific decluttering tips for the laundry room. You’re most likely going to be relocating things that belong somewhere else. Or admitting that some things that are there are going to have to stay there and find a better way to organize them (baskets hide things well!).
These are the only laundry related things I can think that you may need to declutter:
- Recycle any empty detergent bottles that are lying around
- Finally toss those socks that have been mismatched for awhile (look for someplace that does textile recycling so they don’t end up in the landfill!)
Mainly you need to focus on determining what the purpose of your laundry room is and then relocate anything that doesn’t fit your vision.
Pictures and Links to Inspire You
Here are some creative ways to create clutter-free laundry rooms!
- I love how simple and clutter-free this laundry area is! Even the inside of the cabinets is clutter-free because everything is contained in labelled baskets.
- Here’s a clutter-free laundry room with a top-loading washer. Same idea with baskets and a cabinet to contain necessities.
- More baskets and cabinets which make it easy to keep this laundry room clutter free.

If You’re On A Roll…
You can spend some time cleaning your laundry room {lint and dust, detergent build-up, deep cleaning the washer and dryer, etc.}. There are LOTS of cleaning tips below on my Cleaning & Cleaning Supplies board.
You can also take some time to think through your laundry routine and make changes to help make it less overwhelming.
Or, you can think through the types of clutter you dealt with today and the typical traffic patterns in your house, and come up with organizational solutions to prevent the clutter from returning.
