Welcome back to 31 Days of Easy Decluttering!

If you’ve missed any of the previous posts, there are links to them all here.

Today’s Easy Decluttering Project

Today we’re decluttering CD or DVD collections. If you stream music and movies then you’ve probably already decluttered your CDs and DVDs and you may not have much to do today. But if you haven’t, today’s the day to tackle them!

Many people don’t pay for streaming services and prefer to use their CD and DVD players, which is totally fine, but CD’s and DVD’s can take up a lot of space, especially if you’re not really using them very much. Hopefully that will motivate you to let go of some!

Easy Decluttering Steps

Throughout the series, you’ll follow these steps to complete each daily task. {Don’t forget to take before and after pictures to share too!}

Note: The main purpose of this series is to declutter so don’t get overwhelmed doing too much cleaning.  Once your house is less cluttered it will be easier to clean so you can always come back and do it later!

Also, if you have the time, you can organize the space while you’re doing this step, but don’t get overwhelmed with too much organizing this month.  We’re focused on decluttering!

Purging Tips for Your CD’s or DVD’s

Follow the steps listed above, and use these tips as you purge (step #5) your CD or DVD collection:

  • Return any that don’t belong to you
  • Declutter any that you haven’t listened to or watched in over a year (or whatever time period you think is reasonable)
  • Purge any that you don’t enjoy anymore
  • Let go of any that you don’t anticipate watching or listening to again
  • Declutter any that you forgot you even had (they obviously aren’t very important to you and you won’t miss them if they’re gone)
  • Purge any that you only watch occasionally and you know you can access another way (streaming, borrowing, etc.)
  • Give away any that you know someone else will enjoy more than you

Once you’ve set aside the CDs or DVDs that you’re not going to keep, decide what you want to do with them. Here are a few options:

  1. Give some to friends, family or neighbours that you know will appreciate them (particularly people who may not use streaming services)
  2. Donate them
  3. Sell some (Ebay, Amazon, Kijiji, Craigslist, or a used entertainment store). Just make sure your efforts to recoup some of the cost of the CD’s and DVD’s don’t end up leaving you with piles cluttering up your house for weeks or months!

Once you’ve decluttered your CD or DVD collection, make sure you follow the one-in-one-out rule to avoid cluttering your collections in the future!

Pictures and Links to Inspire You

  • Here are some more decluttering tips for CD’s and DVD’s, as well as storage options.
  • There are lots of products you can purchase to store your CDs and DVDs without taking up so much space if you’re willing to get rid of the cases and liners or store them somewhere else. For example, you can use binders, cases (like the one shown below), or boxes. Whatever works best for your available space and how you tend to access your entertainment.
