Day 30: Cookware {31 Days of Easy Decluttering}

Welcome back to 31 Days of Easy Decluttering! If you’ve missed any of the previous posts, there are links to them all here.

Today’s Easy Decluttering Project

Today we’re talking about decluttering your cookware.  Pots, pans, and casserole dishes.  Everything you use to cook with.

If you enjoy cooking and you use most of the items in your kitchen, then you may not need to purge very many items.  Take a good look though, because you probably have some favourites that you use most of the time, leaving some pieces unused.

Chances are you received a cookware set as a wedding gift, but you don’t use everything in the set.  Or you’ve added bits and pieces through the years and don’t use some of your older cookware.

Why hang onto all those dishes you aren’t using?  They’re taking up prime real estate in your kitchen!  Use that space for things you use all the time and declutter the items you don’t use.

Easy Decluttering Steps

Throughout the series, you’ll follow these steps to complete each daily task.  {Don’t forget to take before and after pictures to share too!}

Note: The main purpose of this series is to declutter so don’t get overwhelmed doing too much cleaning.  Once your house is less cluttered it will be easier to clean so you can always come back and do it later!

Also, if you have the time, you can organize the space while you’re doing this step, but don’t get overwhelmed with too much organizing this month.  We’re focused on decluttering!

Purging Tips for Cookware

Follow the steps listed above, and use these tips as you purge (step #5) your cookware:

  • Throw away any pots, pans, or casserole dishes that are broken
  • Purge any mismatched pairs (pots without lids, lids without pans, etc.) unless you use them anyway
  • Give away or donate all cookware that you have not used in the last 3 months {except some special pans you only use occasionally – like your turkey roasting pan}
  • Give away or donate all cookware that you don’t really like
  • Consider how often you make homemade meals that require multiple pots and pans at once and determine how many of each size and type you really need (e.g. do you need 5 fry pans? 6 sauce pans?)
  • Keep in mind how often you clean your dishes as well
  • Think about your available space (ideally without stacking too many dishes inside each other so it’s easier to get at the ones you want without having to move all the rest)
  • Based on the answers to the 3 previous points, purge until you have a realistic number of pots, pans, and casserole dishes for your lifestyle and space

Pictures and Links to Inspire You

Once you’ve decluttered your cookware, there are lots of different ways you can store everything, depending on your space. There are various pots and pans organizers you can buy as well as lid organizers. Here are a few options that can help you keep your cookware uncluttered:

  • Store large pots with their lids on top, since you can’t usually stack those pots anyway, nest similar types of pans, and use a rack to store lids from all the other pans (see it in the back?).
  • You can hang your pots and pans from hooks in your cabinet {look at how uncluttered this looks with only 1 of each size pot!}
  •  And lastly, I love this idea to store pots and pans vertically using dividers, with a shelf for the lids.

If You’re On A Roll…

You can declutter your bakeware too.  Or your serving pieces.  Or you can organize the cookware you decided to keep, so it remains uncluttered moving forward.

Good luck with today’s decluttering project!  I’d love to hear how you did, so please leave a comment and use the hashtag #31DaysEasyDecluttering when you share your pictures.

How many pots, pans and casserole dishes did you declutter today?  How do you organize your cookware to help keep it clutter free?
