Welcome back to 31 Days of Easy Decluttering!  If you’ve missed any of the previous posts, there are links to them all here.

Today’s Easy Decluttering Project

Today we’re talking about decluttering your t-shirts.  Or whatever other clothes you haven’t decluttered yet.  We’ve already discussed how to declutter your sock drawer, hanging clothes, and underwear drawer, so for most people the only clothes left are t-shirts, and maybe jeans or workout clothes.  I’ll focus on t-shirts, but you can apply the same principles to decluttering any other clothes.

T-shirt drawers often get cluttered because we like to hang onto them.  They’re comfortable.  We feel relaxed when we wear them and they hold positive memories.  People don’t tend to outgrow t-shirts either. So we just keep accumulating t-shirts.

But, most people only wear a few of their t-shirts.  We wear our favourites, wash them, and then put them back on top of the pile.  How often do you wear the t-shirts on the bottom of your piles?

Today, take a good, honest look at your t-shirts and declutter them so you’re not facing a toppling pile in your closet or an overstuffed drawer in your dresser.

Easy Decluttering Steps

Throughout the series, you’ll follow these steps to complete each daily task.  {Don’t forget to take before and after pictures to share too!}

Note: The main purpose of this series is to declutter so don’t get overwhelmed doing too much cleaning.  Once your house is less cluttered it will be easier to clean so you can always come back and do it later!

Also, if you have the time, you can organize the space while you’re doing this step, but don’t get overwhelmed with too much organizing this month.  We’re focused on decluttering!

Purging Tips for T-Shirts

Follow the steps listed above, and use these tips as you purge (step #5) your t-shirts:

  • Throw out any t-shirts that are worn, ripped, or have holes (use them for cleaning rags or find a place for textile recycling)
  • Relocate any items that don’t belong with your t-shirts
  • Donate or give away all t-shirts you haven’t worn in the last 3 months
  • Donate or give away any t-shirts you don’t like
  • Donate or give away t-shirts that don’t fit well
  • If you have sentimental t-shirts that you want to keep, but you never wear, find somewhere to store them so they are not mixed in with the t-shirts you wear regularly (a memory bin in a storage room, a container in the top shelf of your closet, etc.)

You can check out the previous clothing posts (listed above) for more decluttering tips.

Since I haven’t shown a Peter Walsh clip for awhile, here’s his short video on decluttering your closet, including your t-shirt piles.

Pictures and Links to Inspire You

Once you’ve decluttered your t-shirts, you can organize the ones you’re keeping to make it easy to see what you have and find what you want.

Here are a few ideas to help you:

  • Fold your t-shirts the way that clothing stores do (with the sleeves folded back) and then fold them in half or thirds again (depending on the depth of your drawers).  Then store your folded shirts vertically in your drawer instead of piling them up horizontally. You can see what you have and it’s easier to keep your drawers neat and organized because you can take one out without messing up all the rest. It saves space in the drawer too! You can do it for pants, sweaters, and pajamas too.  I’ve been doing this with my family’s and clients’ clothing for years. Long before Marie Kondo made her folding method famous 🙂
  • You can also fold and then roll t-shirts or tank tops and stand them on end in the drawer (a shoe box or drawer organizer will help keep them vertical). This also works great for workout shirts since they’re hard to fold.

If You’re On A Roll…

You can declutter your hubby’s t-shirts or your kids’ t-shirts.

Or you can declutter any remaining clothing categories you haven’t tackled yet.

Good luck with today’s decluttering project!  I’d love to hear how you did, so please leave a comment and use the hashtag #31DaysEasyDecluttering when you share your pictures.

How many t-shirts did you declutter today?  How do you organize your t-shirt drawer or pile to help keep it clutter free?
