Think you have to spend a lot of money on costly organizing tools to get your house in order?  Nope!  Getting organized doesn’t have to be expensive!

Shelves are a great organizing tool.  But they can be expensive to buy.  If you want to use shelves to help you organize, but don’t want to spend a lot, you can make your own shelves, often for a fraction of the cost of buying them.

Here are some ideas to get you thinking about how you can DIY shelves!

  • If you want to maximize the vertical space somewhere in your home, you can add your own “shelves” using baskets.  Check out this tutorial for a very cheap and easy solution!

  • If you don’t want to attach shelves to a wall, you can use basic shelves and stacks of bricks. I’ve had these shelves for years. Here they are in our basement, but over the years they’ve been in my bedroom, my office, and my living room. I love the look of them!

Desk Shelves

The best thing about DIY’ing shelves is you can make them so that they suit your style and your space.  These ideas are all so different, but they all give you extra space to organize and store items in your home!
