Today’s Easy Decluttering Project

Today we’re talking about decluttering small appliances.  Do you have cupboards full of appliances you rarely use?  Or maybe even never use?  Maybe they are things you think you should use, but in real life you don’t actually use them. 

These small appliances take up valuable space in our kitchens and contribute to the overwhelming feeling of a cluttered home.  If you remove some of the appliances from your kitchen, you could spread out some other items and end up feeling less cluttered when you open your cabinets.  You could even move things off your counters and into cabinets so there’s less visual clutter when you walk into the kitchen.

If less clutter sounds good to you, consider which of your small appliances you can declutter today!

Easy Decluttering Steps

Throughout the series, you’ll follow these steps to complete each daily task.  {Don’t forget to take before and after pictures to share too!}

Note: The main purpose of this series is to declutter so don’t get overwhelmed doing too much cleaning.  Once your house is less cluttered it will be easier to clean so you can always come back and do it later!

Also, if you have the time, you can organize the space while you’re doing this step, but don’t get overwhelmed with too much organizing this month.  We’re focused on decluttering!

Purging Tips for Small Appliances

Follow the steps listed above, and use these tips as you purge (step #5) your small appliances:

  • Gather all the small appliances from around your home (don’t forget those you’re storing in the basement, garage, attic, etc.)
  • Throw away any that don’t work or are missing important parts
  • Donate, give away or sell any that you have not used in the past year {you’ll be able to tell by the layer of dust on them}
  • Declutter duplicate items {e.g. a grilled cheese sandwich maker and a panini press}
  • Consider keeping appliances that perform multiple functions and purge the ones that are redundant {this is especially important for those of you who spend a lot of time cooking and baking – you probably use most of your small appliances regularly and may not feel you have any to declutter, but maybe some can still be purged if you have others that can perform the same functions}
  • Donate, give away or sell any appliances that you don’t use very often and that you can borrow from someone when you do need it

It’s completely your choice what you keep and what you purge.  These guidelines may sound harsh, but living a less cluttered life means choosing to live in the present rather than in the past.  It means being realistic about who we are now and not who we think we want to be or feel we should be.

If you don’t enjoy baking bread, why keep a breadmaker?  If you don’t use your electric carving knife because you don’t cook turkey or roast beef (or you just use a regular knife), why let it take up space in your cabinets?

You may be saying, “but I paid a lot of money for that!” or “it was a wedding gift!”.  That may be true, but it doesn’t change the fact that you’re not using it.  You won’t get that money back by keeping it (you may even make a bit of money if you’re able to sell it).  So let it go.  The person who gave you that appliance gave it to you as a gift.  Not an anchor to weigh you down.  Set it free.  You’ll be glad you did.

So take 10-15 minutes today deciding what small appliances you can part with.  And then enjoy the peace of less cluttered cabinets.

My Small Appliances

I decluttered my small appliances several years ago and have never looked back!

My Cuisinart 5-in-1 replaced my griddle, small grill, waffle maker, and sandwich maker. You can read more in this post. This one appliance (plus waffle insert plates) takes up a lot less space.

Instead of all of these small appliances!

And my Nutri Ninja 2-in-1 replaced my blender, food processor, and bread maker. You can read more in this post. One appliance doesn’t take up much space, even with the accessories (which I store in a small basket).

It replaced all of this!

You may not be in the market for a multipurpose appliance right now, but keep it in mind whenever you need to replace any of your existing appliances so you can reduce how many small appliances you have in your home!
