31 Days of Organizing Tips: Day 22 (Main Bedroom)

Spread the love

Welcome to Day Twenty Two of the 31 Days of Organizing Tips series! Throughout this series I’m sharing organizing tips that will help you on your journey from overwhelmed to organized.

Today I’m sharing tips for organizing your main bedroom. This is a space that often gets overlooked when it comes to organizing, so it can become overwhelming. But, I think main bedrooms should be a haven. A place you love to go to relax.

In order to create a peaceful feel, it’s important to keep your main bedroom organized. This helps you get your day off to a great start, saves you time in the morning when you can easily find what you need, and helps you feel calm and contented as you’re falling asleep. It’s definitely worth the effort to keep it organized!

Here are a few tips:

  • Don’t let your main bedroom become a dumping ground. Be honest… when you’re cleaning the house quickly before someone comes over, how many times have you tossed things in your bedroom and closed the door? And then how long did those things stay in your room?
  • Depending on your space, decide if you want to keep most/all of your clothing in your closet or just your dressy clothes.  Many older homes have small closets so most of your clothing will need to be stored in dressers. If you have a newer home with a large closet, you may choose to hang more clothes.
  • Organize your clothing by function/use (short sleeve, long sleeve, sweaters, workout clothes, jeans, etc.). This makes it easy to see what you have and saves time rummaging through everything to find what you need.
  • If you have large drawers in your dresser, use drawer organizers to keep your clothes separated.
  • Keep your clothes off the floor (or any other visible surface!). If you prefer to wear some items more than once but don’t want to put them back in the dresser or closet once they’ve been worn, find a way to “hide” them. You could create a special drawer for these items, use a basket, hang them on the back of your closet, or put them inside a storage bench.

Here are a few more ideas for organizing your bedroom:

1.  For a less cluttered feel in your main bedroom, keep flat surfaces such as night tables and dressers clear.  If you need to keep frequently used items out, use baskets to hide them (and remember to keep like items grouped together).

2.  Purge! Purge! Purge! Our own rooms tend to be the place we purge the least. The Pareto Principle says we usually wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time, so why are we struggling to fit everything we have into our dresser drawers and closets? If you haven’t worn something in over a year or it doesn’t fit comfortably or it doesn’t make you feel amazing, then give it away. Less is more when it comes to clothing.

If you said "no" to wearing a certain shirt today, you'll probably say no to wearing that shirt...tomorrow...next week...next month....and next year.

3.  Fold clothes in a way that you can put them in drawers or baskets vertically. This saves a lot of space. It’s also easy to see what you have, and your drawers stay neater longer. I started doing this long before Marie Kondo made her folding methods famous LOL!

4.  If you use the space under your bed for storage, make sure it is organized (keep like with likeuse containers, and create labels).  Note:  if you have a tendency to let that space under your bed get cluttered with things that are never looked at, then either organize it well (and keep it organized) or else keep it empty so there’s no chance of it becoming a hiding place for clutter! Under the bed is a great place to store off season clothing, extra shoes or purses, or clothing that doesn’t fit but that you’re actively working towards fitting into again. There are tons of different options for under the bed storage (bins, baskets, fabric containers, etc.). Or you can make your own (see tutorial in the post below).

5.  If you have a night table or two, use drawer organizers to keep them organized.  They could become junk drawers otherwise. Not that I have any experience with that.

6.  Always make your bed. An unmade bed can feel surprisingly overwhelming as you go throughout your day. It doesn’t take long to make your bed and it will help you feel on top of things all day. Plus you’re less likely to dump a pile of stuff on it when it looks so pretty! And it’s such a nice feeling to climb into a nicely-made bed at night. You don’t have to make it perfectly, but if you want to know how to do that, check out the tutorial below.
